Report on Rivers International.

The 2009 IFFA Rivers International was fished on the River Taff at Merthyr Tydfil on

Friday June 26th. The four teams stayed at the Castle Hotel, Merthyr during the

week prior to the match and enjoyed some excellent practice sessions on the

competition stretches thanks to the generosity of the host club Merthyr Tydfil

Angling Associaztion. The practice days were bright and very warm but anglers

enjoyed great fishing. Match day dawned a little duller and the expected rains

arrived by lunch time.
The match was won by an excellent Wales team who thus claimed the Geoff
Clackson

Trophy. Their team was made up of 'local' anglers and they put this advantage to

good use. The Irish team were challenging in second place at lunch time and things

were looking good for us. However England had two great afternoon sessions at in

the end just piped us for second place. Scotland finished in fourth place.

Full results were as follows:
1st    Wales with 92 fish and 34 team placings (4227 pts).
2nd   England with 63 fish and 45 team placings (2786 pts).
3rd   Ireland with 60 fish and 56 team placings (2735 pts)
4th   Scotland with 33 fish and 65 team placings (1495)

Top rod was Phillip Jehu (Wales) with 5 placings, winning the Moc Morgan Trophy.
Grant Gibson (Scotland) had the largest fish (44.5cms) and so won the Mike Childs Trophy.
Top Irish rod was Nicky Moore (North Kildare) and he retains his place for the

2010 match in England.

The Irish team for the match was as follows:
Seam Bowen (Mallow), Captain, John Higgins (Nth. Kildare), Joe Quinn, (Conn/Cullin),

Nicky Moore (Nth. Kildare) and Damien Walsh (Mallow).
Reserve was Brian Russell (Dromore) and Team Coach was Seamus O'Neill.

 Team Manager was Ian Rowand.

MUNSTER CHAMPIONSHIPS 2009

Sunday 10th of May 2009 saw the holding of the annual provincial trout flyfishing

championships held at Lough Lein, Killarney, Co. Kerry.

A  total of 223 anglers, 128 of whom caught fish, were accommodated on the lake,

thanks to the host clubs, Lough Lein Anglers Association,

Killarney Salmon and Trout Anglers Association and  The National Parks and

Wildlife Service (Duchas).

The day  was fine with light to moderate east to northeast winds, a contrast to the

strong westerlies which had been the feature of the weather for the preceding week.

Trout were encountered on all manner of fly patterns, including jungle cock variants,

nymphs and more modern concoctions such as crunchers. An increased size limit of

ten inches to the fork of the tail ensured that many trout were returned to the water

alive and unharmed, to challenge the skills of  anglers in the future.

Fish were found in all parts of the lake, although, ironically, the most productive part

on the day was the Bog Bay, within a very short distance of the starting point.

The competition itself was a great success with anglers from all over the province

meeting in friendly rivalry to win places on the Interprovincial team and take home

the Mangan Cup and Examiner Cup and top club team prizes.

Old friendships were renewed and newcomers were welcomed at the single starting

 and finishing point, Ross Castle.

The organisers, representing The Munster Regional Trout Angling Council and

The Munster Comittee of the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association worked tirelessly

all day to ensure that all went smoothly and were represented at the dinner

and prizegiving in the Dromhall Hotel by Mr Denis Cronin and Mr Denis Barrett.

Mr Peter O'Toole, of Duchas, a past winner of the individual trophy on more than

a few occasions, was at the top table as was Mr Tom Lofts, President of the

Munster Council. Mr John Behan, National Chairman of the ITFFA was also present

at the dinner.

The overall individual championship was won by Michael Linehan, representing the

Macroom Club, with a magnificent catch of seven trout.

The Macroom B team  also won the top team event and were represented by:

Michael Linehan, David Mears, Tom 'Swanky' Sweeney and Denis Cronin.

The heaviest trout, (397gms) was caught by John Fleming of Araglen Anglers Association.

Fourteen of The Munster Interprovincial team places were awarded to the anglers

who were sucessful on the day.

They were: Michael Linehan, Tom Beecher, David Mears, Will Finn, John Healy, Robert Creichton,

Patrick O Loughlin, Christy Connell, Stephen Galvin, Paul Phillips, P.J.O'Brien,

Bart Bambury, Rob Ormond and Michael Dunne, who was last year's individual winner.

These join the four members of last year's team who held their places,

Brendan Spillane, John Behan, Denis Cronin and Tom Murphy,

at the 2009 Interprovincial Competitions in September at Lough Arrow.

The total number of fish weighed was 215 .

Great credit is due to the organisational and logistical skills of the commitees who ensured

that all competitors were on the lake in good time and all thoroughly enjoyed their day out.

2008 ITFFA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2008 National took place  on Lough Conn on Saturday 26th April.

With extremely slow fishing on Lough Conn over recent weeks and the bigger keepable fish

reluctant to make an appearance, all anglers knew how difficult the task of catching a 13 inch fish

would be.

By the time all of the boats had returned to shore at 6.30pm it was clear that the day had gone

as expected. However not everyone had a blank day. Some notable catches were from

Andy Duncan (4 fish) Barry Fox (3 fish) Seamus Kelly (3 fish) Eddie Harte (3 fish)

Andy, Barry, and Seamus had decided to head for the relatively quite Castlehill Bay.

It was clear that the Champion would come from one of these three anglers.

Below are the details of 2008 National Results.

1st Andrew Duncan (Brosna)                4fish @ 5.84lbs
2ndSeamus Kelly (Ballina/Cloghans)     3fish @ 4.40lbs.
3rd.Barry Fox (Lough Gill)                    3fish @ 4.26lbs.

The following 7 anglers also qualified for 2009 Internationals.
Liam Buckley (Killarney)
Eddie Harte (Collooney/Ballisodare)
John Walsh (WRFB)
Vincent Downes (Mallow Trout)
Mark Regan (Collinamuck)
Robert Marshall (Northern Bank)
Aidan Heffernan (Ballina/Cloghans)

Winner of the Deacy Cup (Heaviest Fish) was Laim Buckley (Killarney) with a

ITTFA TEAM COMPETITION

FLEXTEC ITFFA TEAM COMPETITION

The Flextec Team Championships took place on

Lough Lene on Saturday 12th April.

It was fished on a catch, measure and release basis

and a great day was had by all.

30 Teams of four took part. With 120 anglers , there was a lot of boat pressure

on certain areas of the lake.

The winning team and 2008 Flextec Champions were BROSNA.

Denis Goulding from the Brosna club had a fantastic day, when

most anglers struggled to catch at all.

Denis ended up head and shoulders above the rest with 16 fish.

The longest fish award went to Frank Reilly. The fish measured 50 cms.

The results are posted below. I have also included the

top 20 anglers out of the 120 angler field.

Also pictures are included of the day.

Thanks to FLEXTEC for sponsoring the event. Also a big thanks

to Tommy Fagan and the Lough Lene Club for hosting the match.

And finally thanks to all the anglers who supported the competition.

WINNING MUNSTER TEAM 2007 INTERPRO LOUGH LEIN KILLARNEY

Munster win three in a row as Basil takes title at Interprovincial

The ITFFA Interprovincial Angling Championships took place on Saturday 1st September on beautiful Lough Lein, Killarney.

The Munster Team were bidding to make it three Interpro titles in a row after they were victorious last year on Lough Lene  (Westmeath) and on Lough Mask in 2005.

With 18 of the top anglers from each province taking place conditions were ideal. With a stiff westerly breeze blowing straight down the lough, most boats headed for the drifts around the “Metal Man” and the “Wash”.

Fishing proved difficult for a lot of anglers, and by lunch time it was clear that many anglers were struggling as the sound of engines could be heard all over the lough.

When boats arrived back at the Castle for the weigh in, it was clear the some boats had been in the right place at the right time while other boats reported, meeting very few fish throughout the day.

Fishing small black flies and sedge patterns on a floating line at the wash drift, the overall individual winner was Basil Shields from Galway / Corrib.

The Team Trophy went to Munster who had a total of 85 fish. Both Connaught and Leinster had 59 fish and Ulster had 50 fish. The following individual anglers have now qualified to represent Ireland at next year’s International matches.

1.     B. Shields

2.     J. Healy

3.     P. Kelly

4.     J. Cahill

5.     D. Walsh

6.     B. Spillane

7.     B. O’Brien

8.     J. O’Connell

9.     P O’Connell

10.  M. Linehan.
